Side Effects

GI disturbances.
Lactic acidosis.
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, flatulence, occasional metalic taste, rash, malabsorption of Vit B12.


Maturity onset (non-insulin dependent) diabetes.
Polycystic ovary syndrome.

Contra Indications

Renal failure.
Cardiovascular collapse.
Diabetic ketoacidosis.
Severe hepatic insufficiency.
Severe impairment of thyroid function.
Severe infection or shock.
Cardiac failure, CHF, IDDM.
Acute or chronic alcohloism.
Pregnancy and lactation.


Patients should not consume alcohol as there is an interaction between metformin and alcohol which could lead to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
CHF especially in those with unstable or acute heart failure.
Risk of lactic acid accumulation increases with the degree of renal impairment.
